- Temple History Sri Ujjaini Mahankali Temple, located at Rani Gunj in Secunderabad, Telangana, is one of the most revered and historic temples dedicated to Goddess Mahankali. Established over two centuries ago, the temple stands as a symbol of unwavering devotion and divine grace. Its origin dates back to 1813, when Sri Suriti Appaiah, a Doli Bearer (Army Bearer) serving in a military battalion, was deputed to Ujjain in present-day Madhya Pradesh. During his stay, a devastating cholera epidemic claimed thousands of lives. Deeply devoted to Goddess Mahakali, Sri Appaiah and his fellow soldiers prayed at the Mahakali Temple in Ujjain, vowing that if they survived the epidemic and returned safely, they would establish a temple in her honor at Secunderabad. Honoring this sacred vow, Sri Suriti Appaiah returned to Secunderabad and, in July 1815, installed a wooden idol of Goddess Mahakali, marking the foundation of the present-day Sri Ujjaini Mahankali Temple. During the construction of the sanctum sanctorum, a stone idol of Sri Manikyalamma was discovered beneath the temple premises. Recognizing its divine significance, the idol was consecrated alongside Goddess Mahakali, and both deities have been worshipped together ever since. Over the years, the temple expanded through the dedicated efforts of Sri Suriti Appaiah, his descendants, and numerous devotees. Around 1900, a mandapam was constructed to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims, and additional shops were built near the temple entrance to generate income for its maintenance. A temple committee was later formed to oversee daily rituals and religious activities. In 1947, the Endowments Department assumed responsibility for the temple's administration, and in 1953, a Board of Trustees was constituted to ensure its systematic development and management. The original wooden idol was replaced with the present stone idol of Goddess Mahakali in 1964. The deity is depicted in a majestic Padmasana (lotus posture) with four hands holding a sword, spear, damaru, and a vessel of Amrut (nectar), symbolizing divine power, protection, and prosperity. The idol is adorned with a beautiful silver kavacham, while the sanctum has been enhanced with a magnificent silver Rudraksha Mandapam and intricately crafted silver-plated doors through the generous contributions of devotees and philanthropists. Sri Ujjaini Mahankali Temple is internationally renowned for hosting the grand Secunderabad Bonalu Festival, celebrated during the Hindu month of Ashada. Lakhs of devotees from Telangana and neighboring states visit the temple every year to offer Bonam to Goddess Mahakali, seek her blessings, and fulfill their vows.
