Temple History The roots of the ISKCON temple in Abids, Hyderabad, are deeply intertwined with the global vision of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. During his inaugural visit to the city in 1972, Srila Prabhupada conducted a series of influential lectures that drew immense crowds and sparked a local movement for Krishna consciousness. Recognizing Hyderabad as a pivotal cultural and spiritual hub for South India, he envisioned a magnificent center that would serve as a regional headquarters. This vision began to take physical shape when the renowned philanthropist and businessman, Sri G. Pulla Reddy, moved by Srila Prabhupada’s devotion, donated a prime piece of land in the bustling Abids area to the mission. The construction of the temple, known formally as the Sri Sri Radha Madanmohan Mandir, began in earnest following the foundation stone ceremony in 1973. The project was unique in its architectural ambition, designed to resemble a blooming lotus flower to symbolize the purity of the soul rising above material existence. Unlike many modern structures, the temple was built with deep Vedic symbolism in mind; its four distinct domes represent the four Vedas, while the eight massive pillars supporting the structure signify the fundamental principles of Bhakti Yoga. The construction phase was a labor of love for local devotees and international volunteers alike, who worked tirelessly to meet the high aesthetic and spiritual standards set by the founder. The temple reached its spiritual pinnacle on August 18, 1976, during its grand inauguration. Srila Prabhupada himself performed the Prana Pratishtha (consecration) ceremony, personally installing the exquisite deities of Sri Sri Radha Madanmohan, Sri Sri Jagannatha, Baladeva, Subhadra, and Sri Sri Gaura-Nitai. Since that historic day, the temple has evolved from a quiet sanctuary into a massive socio-spiritual complex.
