- Temple History Sri Alaghu Mallari Krishna Swamy Temple is located in the village of Mannarpoluru near Sullurupeta in SPSR Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh. The village lies on the banks of the Kalindi river and is traditionally associated with Malla Yodhas, or wrestlers. The temple is considered one of the oldest Krishna temples in the region, believed to have been first constructed during the Chola period around the 10th century. It flourished during the reign of Manuma Siddhi of Nellore in the 13th century and was rebuilt in the 17th century by Bangaru Yadama Nayudu. In the 18th century, the Venkatagiri Raja donated five villages to the temple to support its daily rituals. This heritage temple once attracted large numbers of devotees and was served by nine archakas performing worship nine times a day. Over time, temple income declined due to land fragmentation and legislative changes, and parts of the temple such as the tower show signs of age. According to local tradition and the Sthalapurana, Mannarpoluru is believed to be the very site where Lord Krishna engaged in the epic wrestling battle with Jambavantha over the divine jewel Samanthakamani. The jewel was originally granted to Sathrajit by Lord Surya, and later came into the hands of Prasenajit, a lion, and finally Jambavantha. When Sathrajit suspected Krishna of stealing it, the Lord set out to recover it, eventually reaching Jambavantha’s cave. The fierce battle continued for many days until Jambavantha realized Krishna’s true identity as Rama and surrendered. He returned the jewel and offered his daughter Jambavati in marriage to the Lord. Because the Samanthakamani was presented here, the place was once known as Mani Mandapa Kshetram, and as the wrestling between Hari and Jambavantha took place here, the site was also called Malla Hari Poru Uru, meaning the place where Hari fought the wrestling combat. Over centuries, the name evolved into Mannarpoluru. The temple features several unique architectural and spiritual elements. The main sanctum houses Lord Krishna with His consorts Satyabhama and Jambavati, and the temple is believed to be the only one where Jambavati is worshipped alongside the Lord in this way. There is also a shrine for Sri Rukmini, worshipped as Soundaravalli Thayar, the most beautiful consort. Within the complex are shrines for Sri Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman, along with a large idol of Jambavantha and impressive sculptures of Sugreeva and Jatayu. The Garuda idol standing before the main shrine is nearly nine feet tall and is believed to express humility and devotion even today. The temple has the rare distinction of having two Dwajasthambams and two Balipeetams, one aligned with the main shrine and another with the Rama shrine. The vimanam over the sanctum resembles that of Tirumala, featuring lions instead of Garuda carvings. Mannarpoluru was historically a significant stop for pilgrims travelling between temple towns. It is presently a quiet village, around 12–13 km from Sullurupeta on roads branching from NH-16. The temple continues to attract devotees interested in its history, mythology, and rare iconography. When visiting this temple, devotees can also explore nearby sacred sites such as the Chengalamma Parameswari Temple in Sullurupeta, Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Sullurupeta, Venu Gopala Swamy Temple in Mangalampadu, and other Krishna and Vishnu temples in the surrounding areas.
