- Temple History The Trishunda Ganapati Temple, also known as the Trishund Ganpati Mandir, is one of Pune’s most fascinating and historic temples. It is located in the heart of the old city, in the Somwar Peth locality, just about two kilometers from Pune Junction railway station. This temple as a silent reminder of the Peshwa era’s architectural and cultural grandeur. Visitors can easily reach the temple by rickshaw, local bus, or even by foot from nearby city landmarks. However, parking for four-wheelers can be challenging due to the narrow by-lanes, so visitors often prefer to walk a short distance from the main road. The Trishunda Ganapati Temple dates back to the mid-18th century, constructed around 1754–1770 CE, during the late Peshwa period. It was built by Bhimjigiri Gosavi, a saint from Dhampur near Indore, who had settled in Pune. What makes this temple distinct is not just its age but its unique deity — a form of Lord Ganesha that is unlike any other in India. The idol depicts Lord Ganesha with three trunks (tri-shund), six arms, and seated upon a peacock (mayur vahana) rather than the traditional mouse. This representation is said to symbolize the mastery of Ganesha over time — the past, present, and future — as well as over the three gunas (qualities) of nature: sattva, rajas, and tamas. The temple also houses a samadhi (tomb) of its founder, Bhimjigiri Gosavi, located in an underground chamber beneath the main sanctum. This chamber remains closed to the public for most of the year and is only opened on Guru Purnima, a special day that draws thousands of devotees. Over the centuries, the Trishunda Ganapati Temple has become both a spiritual center and a heritage monument that connects Pune’s religious life with its artistic and architectural traditions. Architectural Significance The temple is constructed entirely out of black basalt stone and is a remarkable example of the late-Peshwa architectural style. Its design reflects a blend of Rajasthani, South Indian, and Malwa influences, combined with local Maratha craftsmanship. The external façade is decorated with elaborate carvings — intricate figurines, mythological scenes, and ornamental motifs that show exceptional artistry. The temple also bears three inscriptions — two in Sanskrit (Devanagari script) and one in Persian. The Persian inscription interestingly dedicates the temple to Lord Dattatreya, which reflects the inclusive spiritual beliefs of that era. Inside, the main sanctum houses the Trishunda Ganapati idol — a stunning basalt sculpture radiating power and serenity. 🌺The Trishunda Ganapati Temple celebrates several Hindu festivals with grandeur and devotion. The most prominent among these is Ganesh Chaturthi, when the temple is beautifully decorated with lights, flowers, and traditional motifs. Thousands of devotees visit during the 10-day festival to seek blessings from this rare form of Ganesha. Daily aartis, bhajans, and prasad distribution mark the celebrations.
🌺Another important festival at this temple is Guru Purnima. This is a particularly sacred day because the underground chamber containing the samadhi of Bhimjigiri Gosavi is opened to devotees. It is believed that offering prayers here on Guru Purnima grants divine blessings and spiritual progress.
