- Temple History Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, also known as Talpagiri Ranganathaswamy Temple or Ranganayakulu, is a prominent Hindu temple in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, dedicated to Lord Ranganatha—Lord Vishnu in a reclining posture on the serpent Adisesha. Situated on the banks of the Penna River, this ancient temple is believed to have origins dating back to the Pallava period in the 7th century and was further expanded during the 12th century by King Raja Mahendra Varma. It is regarded as one of the oldest and most revered temples in Nellore. A striking feature of the temple is its towering seven-storied gateway, the Gaaligopuram, meaning “wind tower.” The gopuram rises to a height of nearly 70 feet and is crowned with ten-feet-tall gold-plated kalashams. The tower was constructed by Yeragudipati Venkatachalam Panthulu and showcases the architectural grandeur of the temple. Sculptures of Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, various saints, and intricate carvings adorn the tower and inner sanctum, reflecting the artistic brilliance of the time. Inside the sanctum, the reclining idol of Lord Ranganatha rests magnificently on Adisesha. Devotees circumambulate the inner prakaram while chanting the Sri Vishnu Sahasranamavali, whose thousand names are inscribed on the walls of the shrine. The temple complex also features a mirror hall that draws devotees, and includes shrines for Goddess Rajyalakshmi towards the south and Goddess Andal towards the north of the main temple. According to legend, Lord Vishnu descended to Earth along with Goddess Sridevi and directed Adisesha to become His resting place. Obeying the divine command, Adisesha took the form of a hill at this location, earning the name Talpagiri Kshetra—“the hill of the serpent bed.” It is believed that Sage Kashyapa performed a Poundarika Yaga here on Ekadashi to propitiate the Lord, who appeared from the sacrificial fire to bless the sage. The Skanda Purana narrates that Sri Ranganatha emerged from this sacred fire pit. Throughout the centuries, kings, monks, and devotees rendered service to the temple. When Udayagiri came under foreign attack, members of the Balija community risked their lives to bring the processional deities to Nellore for safekeeping. The great Telugu poet Tikkana Somayaji, minister to King Manumasiddhi, translated the Mahabharata into Telugu at this sacred spot. For over 1300 years, regular worship has continued here following the Sri Vaishnava Pancharatra Agama tradition, along with major festivals such as Brahmotsavam, Pavithrotsavam, and Vasanthotsavam.
