Located in Ellanthakunta, about 3 km from Jammikunta in Telangana, the Sri Sita Rama Chandra Swamy Devasthanam, Ellanthakunta is one of the most spiritually significant Rama temples in the state. Deeply connected to the Ramayana, it is believed that Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana stayed here during their Aranyavasam. According to tradition, Lord Rama performed the Sraadha (Pitru Tharpanam) for King Dasaratha at this very spot using the seeds of the Illanda (jujube) tree, which later gave the village its name — Illandakunta, now known as Ellanthakunta.

- Temple History The Sri Seeta Ramachandra Swamy Temple at Ellanthakunta (also spelled Illandakunta), located about 3 km from Jammikunta and nearly 65 km southeast of Karimnagar in Telangana, is one of the most revered Rama temples in the region and is often referred to as the “Second Bhadrachalam” or the “Bhadradri of Karimnagar.” Deeply rooted in the Ramayana tradition, the temple is believed to be one of the places where Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lakshmana stayed during their fourteen-year exile in the Dandakaranya forest. According to local legend, it was here that Lord Rama received the sorrowful news of King Dasaratha’s demise and performed the Pitru Tharpanam (Sraadha ritual) for his father. As traditional ritual materials were not available in the forest, Rama is said to have used the seeds or fruits of the Illanda (jujube) tree for the ceremony. The presence of a temple tank (kunta) beside Illanda trees gave the village its name Illandakunta, which gradually evolved into Ellanthakunta. Some traditions also suggest that Lord Rama stayed here for thirteen days during his journey. Architecturally, the temple reflects classic Hindu temple design with influences attributed to the Kalyani Chalukyas and the Kakatiyas. It is built in a Trikutalayam style, symbolizing the unity of the Trimurti, with the central shrine dedicated to Sri Seeta Ramachandra Swamy, a Brahma Lingam shrine on the right, and a Shiva Lingam shrine on the left. One of the unique features of the temple is that it faces west, which is relatively rare for Rama temples. The sanctum houses beautifully carved figures of Sita, Rama, Lakshmana, and Ranganayaka Swamy sculpted on a large boulder, and devotees believe these idols are Swayambhu (self-manifested). The images of Alvars are carved at the base of the boulder. The temple complex includes multiple mandapams built at different times, including several sixteen-pillared halls, a twelve-pillared mandapam, and a yagasala mandapam mentioned in inscriptions. The eastern entrance displays Mithuna sculptures and a figure of Lajja Gauri, while the courtyard contains sculptures of Vinayaka, Virabhadra, Vaishnavite Dvarapalas, and a Garuda Stambha with a miniature shrine atop it. Behind the temple lies a beautiful Koneru (holy tank), adding to the sacred atmosphere. Inscriptions in later Telugu script record donations and constructions by devotees, indicating continued patronage over centuries.
