- Temple History The temple's most impressive feature, unlike any other in the country, is the tall, upright linga in the sanctum sanctorum. It is a pillar with a broad, undulating face. In front of it is a figure of Shiva resting solemnly on the shoulders of a dwarf Yaksha. Excavations in the temple have revealed a square enclosure. The human linga was placed between two highly polished stone circles in the 2nd-3rd centuries BCE. No structural enclosure appears to have existed at this stage. Like the sculptures at Barhut, Sanchi and Amaravati of the 2nd-3rd centuries BCE, the linga appears to have been worshipped openly in accordance with the Vriksha Chaitya cult. The linga here is in the shape of an erect penis (Urdhva Retha). The two circular pedestals represent the vagina. The form of the god here embodies the Vedic-Rudra (Kapilavarna, naked without the sacrificial fire, wearing a Parashu), Virupaksha (with three eyes), Kapardi (wearing a jatajuta), and Nataraja (dancing in a state of unconsciousness), making this stone lingam the largest in the country. This stone lingam was probably first introduced during the Satavahana rule in the 2nd century CE in a brick temple built in the Hasti Prastha style. During the Satavahana rule, the temple was expanded and rebuilt in stone. It was then rebuilt in stone in the late Pallava-Bana era in the 8th century CE. Well-carved idols with symbols like Chandrasekhara, Dakshinamurthy, Vishnu, Durga and Surya came into existence during the Chola period. It was during this time that small temples were built for Surya, Kartikeya with his deities, and Anandavalli. పరశురామేశ్వర మందిరం దేశంలో మరే చోటా లేని విధంగా, ఇక్కడి గర్భగుడిలో నిటారుగా ఉన్న ఎత్తైన లింగమే ఈ దేవాలయం యొక్క గొప్పతనం. ఇది ఎగుడుదిగుడులతో కూడిన విశాలమైన ముఖమును కలిగి ఉన్న ఒక స్థంభము వంటిది. దీని ముందు భాగంలో ఒక మరుగుజ్జు అయిన యక్షుని భుజములపై గంభీరంగా సేద తీరుతున్న శివుని చిత్రము ఉన్నది. మందిరంలోని తవ్వకాలు చతురస్రాకారపు కంచె వంటి ఆకారాన్ని వెలికితీశాయి. మనుష లింగాన్ని క్రీ.పూ. 2-3వ శతాబ్దాలలో రెండు అత్యంత పాలిష్ చేయబడిన రాతి వలయాల లోపల ఏర్పాటు చేశారు. ఈ దశలో నిర్మాణాత్మకమైన కవచం ఏదీ ఉనికిలో ఉన్నట్లు కనిపించదు. క్రీ.పూ. 2-3 శతాబ్దాలలోని బర్హుత్, సాంచీ మరియు అమరావతి శిల్పాల వలె ఈ లింగాన్ని వృక్ష చైత్య ఆరాధన ప్రకారం బహిరంగంగానే పూజించ బడినట్లుగా తెలుస్తోంది. ఇచ్చటి లింగం నిటారుగా ఉన్న పురుషాంగం (ఊర్ధ్వ రేత) ఆకారంలో ఉంటుంది. రెండు వృత్తాకార పీఠాలు యోనిని గుర్తు చేస్తాయి. ఇక్కడి భగవంతుని స్వరూపంలో, వేద-రుద్ర (కపిలవర్ణము, యజ్ఞోపవీతం లేకుండా నగ్న రూపం, పరశుని ధరించడం), విరూపాక్ష (త్రినేత్ర సహితం), కపర్ది (జటాజూటము కలిగి ఉండడం), నటరాజ (నాట్యం చేస్తూ అపస్మారక స్థితిలో అడుగులు వేయడం) తత్వాలను పొందుపరిచినట్లుగా కనుక ఈ శిలావేదిక మనుష లింగం దేశం మొత్తంలో గొప్పది. బహుశా శాతవాహన పాలనలో మొదటి సారిగా ఈ శిలావేదిక క్రీ శ. 2వ శతాబ్దంలో హస్తి పృష్ట శైలిలో ఇటుకతో నిర్మించబడిన దేవాలయంలోకి తీసుకురాబడింది. శాతవాహనుల పాలనలో ఈ ఆలయం విస్తరణకు నోచుకొని రాతితో పునర్నిర్మించబడింది. ఆనక క్రీ. శ. 8వ శతాబ్దంలో చివరి పల్లవ-బాణ శకంలో రాతితో పునర్నిర్మించబడింది. చంద్రశేఖర, దక్షిణామూర్తి, విష్ణువు, దుర్గ మరియు సూర్య వంటి చిహ్నాలతో చక్కగా చెక్కబడిన ప్రతిమలు చోళుల కాలంలో ఉనికిలోకి వచ్చాయి. ఈ సమయంలోనే సూర్యునికి, దేవేరులతో కూడిన కార్తికేయుడికి, ఆనందవల్లికి చిన్న ఆలయాలు నిర్మించబడ్డాయి.
