Temple History Somnath Jyotirlinga Temple is one of the most sacred Shiva temples in India and is considered the first among the twelve Jyotirlingas. According to Hindu mythology, the temple was originally built by the Moon God (Chandra) to worship Lord Shiva and seek relief from a curse. The name “Somnath” means “Lord of the Moon. The temple has a long and remarkable history of destruction and reconstruction. It was invaded and rebuilt several times over centuries, symbolizing resilience and unwavering faith. The present structure was rebuilt in 1951 under the leadership of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and follows the traditional Chalukya architectural style.
