- Temple History "Bhimashankar Temple is one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and is located in the Sahyadri mountain range. According to ancient legends, Lord Shiva appeared here after defeating the demon Tripurasura, and the sweat that flowed from Shiva’s body is believed to have formed the Bhima River, which flows through Maharashtra and Karnataka. The temple structure reflects Nagara-style architecture, with intricate stone carvings and a simple yet powerful sanctum. Though the exact date of construction is unclear, historical records indicate that the temple was developed and expanded during the Maratha period, especially under the patronage of Nana Phadnavis. Surrounded by dense forests, Bhimashankar is also part of the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, making it unique among Jyotirlingas for its natural setting. The peaceful environment enhances its spiritual importance and attracts both pilgrims and nature lovers.
