- Temple History Sri Vijayeswara Swamy temple is located at the foothills of Indrakeeladri, adjacent to the river Krishna. This is an oldest temple belongs to Lord Siva. According to pouranic references Arjuna offered prayers to Lord Siva here. It is a familiar story that Arjuna got pasupatastra from Lord Siva here. One can see the peaceful and devotional atmosphere in this temple premises.. In the past, during the Dwapara Yuga, during the exile of the Pandavas, Arjuna performed a severe penance to the Supreme Lord on Indrakeeladri for the Pasupatastra. The Supreme Lord was pleased with the penance and to test his devotion, the Supreme Lord came to earth in the form of a bull and sent the illusory boar to break Arjuna's penance. That boar broke Arjuna's penance. Then, in anger, Arjuna shot an arrow at the boar, and at the same time, the Supreme Lord shot an arrow. Arjuna said, "I have killed that boar," and the Supreme Lord fought with each other. Arjuna shot ten arrows, but to no avail, he hit the Supreme Lord on the head with his bow. At that, Arjuna fell down in a faint. After some time, the Supreme Lord realized and, pleased with the penance, gave him the Pasupatastra. Since he performed penance for the Pasupatastra and achieved victory, he installed the Lord on this mountain as Vijayeshwara and worshipped him. Since then, Arjuna was victorious and this city was called Vijayavatika. శ్రీ విజయేశ్వర స్వామి ఆలయం ఇంద్రకీలాద్రి పర్వత ప్రాంతంలో, కృష్ణా నదికి ఆనుకుని ఉంది. ఇది శివుడికి చెందిన పురాతన ఆలయం. పౌర్ణమి సూచనల ప్రకారం అర్జునుడు ఇక్కడ శివుడికి ప్రార్థనలు చేశాడు. అర్జునుడు ఇక్కడ శివుడి నుండి పాశుపతాస్త్రం పొందాడని అందరికీ తెలిసిన కథ. ఈ ఆలయ ప్రాంగణంలో ప్రశాంతమైన మరియు భక్తిపూర్వక వాతావరణాన్ని చూడవచ్చు.. పూర్వము ద్వాపరయుగంలో పాండవ వనవాస సమయమున అర్జునుడు పాశుపతాస్త్రం కోసం ఇంద్రకీలాద్రిపై పరమేశ్వరునికి ఘోర తపస్సు చేసెను. ఆతపస్సుకి పరమేశ్వరుడు మెచ్చి భక్తిని పరీక్షించుటకు భూమికి బోయవాని రూపంలో పరమేశ్వరుడు వచ్చి అర్జునుడి తపస్సు భగ్నం చేయుటకు మాయా వరాహమును పంపెను. ఆ వరాహము అర్జునుడి తపస్సు భగ్నం చేసెను. అప్పుడు వరాహము మీద కోపముతో అర్జునుడు బాణం సంధించగా అదే సమయములో ఈశ్వరుడు బాణం సంధించెను. ఆ వరాహమును నేను వధించానని అర్జునుడు నేను వధించానని ఈశ్వరుడు పరస్పరం యుద్ధం చేసుకొనెను. అర్జునుడు పన్ని అస్త్రములు సంధించినా ఫలితము లేక ధనస్సు తో ఈశ్వరుని శిరస్సు మీద కొట్టెను. అంతట అర్జునుడు మూర్చతో క్రింద పడెను. కొంత సేపటికి పరమేశ్వరుడు సాక్షాత్కరించి తపస్సుకి మెచ్చి పాశపతాస్త్రన్ని ఇచ్చెను. పాశుపతాస్త్రం కోసం తపస్సు చేసి విజయము సాధించడం చేత ఈ పర్వతము మీద ఈశ్వరుణ్ణి విజయేశ్వరునిగా ప్రతిష్ఠించి పూజించెను. అప్పటి నుండి అర్జునుడికి విజయుడు అని ఈ నగరానికి విజయవాటిక అని పేరు వచ్చెను.
