- Temple History The temple of Sri Panakala Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy is an ancient shrine where the Lord manifested Himself in Kruta Yuga. The self-manifested (Swayambhu) deity appears only as a mouth, widely opened, accepting Panakam (jaggery water) as offering. This unique temple is one of the eight important Mahakshetrams where Lord Vishnu manifested himself. The temple follows the sacred Vaikhanasa Agama Shastra traditions. The temple complex features magnificent architecture with contributions from various dynasties. The 11-storied Raja Gopuram, standing at 153 feet, was built by Raja Vasireddy Venkatadri Naidu in 1809 AD. The Mukha Mandapa was constructed by Sri Krishna Devaraya in 1520 AD. Stone inscriptions from the Vijayanagara period can be found on the steps leading to the temple. In 1820 AD, Sri Raja Sarabh Bhogendra Maharaja gifted a golden conch to the temple. The most remarkable feature of this temple is the divine miracle of Panakam offering, which is unique to Mangalagiri and not found anywhere else in the world. When devotees pour jaggery water into the Lord's mouth, exactly half is consumed by the deity, and the remaining half flows back as prasadam. A gurgling sound can be heard during this sacred process, and remarkably, no ants or flies are found near the temple despite the sweet offerings. The Mangalagiri Narasimha Swamy Temple, located on the sacred hill Tothadri, is deeply rooted in ancient Yuga traditions and devotional practices. According to belief, Lord Narasimha accepts different offerings in each Yuga—Nectar (Amrutam) in Kruta Yuga, Pure Ghee in Treta Yuga, Cow’s Milk in Dvapara Yuga, and Panakam (jaggery water) in Kali Yuga. This unique tradition continues even today, with Panakam being the primary offering, symbolizing the Lord’s compassion and accessibility in the present age. The temple’s mythological significance is enriched by several legends. During the Dvapara Yuga, the Pandavas are believed to have visited Tothadri during their exile, and Bhima is said to have suggested the installation of Lord Narasimha and Goddess Rajyalakshmi at this holy site. Another well-known legend speaks of King Indradyumna, who, after being cursed by Sage Agastya to become an elephant, worshipped Lord Narasimha here and ultimately attained moksha through the Lord’s grace. Historically, the temple has attracted saints, scholars, and rulers across centuries, highlighting its spiritual prominence. In the 8th century, Adi Shankaracharya of the Shringeri Peetham is believed to have visited the temple. Later, in 1512 AD, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu offered prayers here, followed by generous patronage from Vijayanagara Emperor Sri Krishna Devaraya in the 16th century.
