- Temple History Legend After the Kurukshetra war, Vedavyasa, seeking peace of mind, came to the Dandakaranya forest with his son Shuka. Enchanted by the serene atmosphere on the banks of the Godavari River, he built a hermitage here and began his penance. The Divine Mother appeared to Sage Vedavyasa and instructed him to build a temple for the three goddesses. Vyasa brought three handfuls of sand from the river and consecrated the idols of the three deities. Since Vyasa lived here for a considerable period, the village was initially called Vyasapuri or Vyasara, and later, due to the influence of the Maharashtrian people residing here, it acquired the name 'Basara'. Here, the sand idols created by Vyasa are adorned with turmeric paste and worshipped. It is strongly believed that even consuming a tiny amount of this turmeric paste bestows immense knowledge and wisdom. The Brahmanda Purana states that the first poet Valmiki installed the idol of Goddess Saraswati here and wrote the Ramayana. Near this temple, there is a marble tomb of Sage Valmiki. It is believed that this is one of the three temples built by the Rashtrakutas on the banks of the Manjira and Godavari rivers. There is a story that a king named Bijjala, who ruled the Nandagiri region in the 6th century with Nanded as his capital, built this temple in Basara. Temple Highlights The Gnana Saraswati Temple in Basara, located within the temple complex, is one of the most famous Saraswati temples in the country. Here, at the Saraswati temple, people give utmost importance to performing the Aksharabhyasam (initiation into learning) ceremony for their children. This is due to the special significance of the three divine idols here, which were consecrated by Vyasa. There is a special fee for the Aksharabhyasam ceremony. People come with their relatives and friends to perform the ceremony for their children. The Aksharabhyasam is conducted in a special hall within the temple premises. Devotees show keen interest in pouring oil into the eternal lamp held by Goddess Gnana Prasunamba in the temple courtyard. Oil is available for purchase here. Devotees interested in acquiring the sarees offered to the Goddess can purchase them. There is also a counter outside where devotees can buy prasadam (offerings). The Temple About 200 years ago, after driving away some miscreants who were engaged in acts of vandalism, a person named Makkaji Patel, with the help of others, rebuilt the temple. The Basara temple is located 200 kilometers from Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh. The Sri Gnana Saraswati Temple in Basara, situated on the banks of the Godavari River, is the only temple dedicated to the goddess of learning in South India. According to legends, after the Mahabharata war, Sage Vyasa embarked on a pilgrimage in search of peace. He reached the serene Kumaranchala hills on the banks of the Godavari River, where he performed penance and pleased the goddess. Finally, the goddess appeared before him and granted him her presence in the form of the divine trinity. The goddess instructed the sage to place three handfuls of sand in three different places every day. Miraculously, these sand mounds transformed into idols of the divine trinity: Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Kali. These goddesses are the principal deities enshrined in Basara today. Although the trinity is present, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati. Children are brought here for the Aksharabhyasam ceremony to begin their education with the blessings of the goddess of knowledge. Vedavati Shila and Ashtateertham are other places of interest around Basara. 🛕Goddess Gnana Saraswathi. The idol is in a seated position holding a Veena. Interestingly, the idol is made of sand but has a protective coating of turmeric.

🌹Vasantha Panchami: Celebrated in Jan/Feb. It is considered the birthday of Goddess Saraswathi and is the most auspicious day for Akshara Abhyasam.
🌹Maha Shivaratri: A grand celebration involving special poojas that start 15 days before the festival.
🌹Devi Navaratri (Dussehra): A 10-day festival in Sep/Oct where the goddesses are decorated in different forms (Alankarams) each day.
🌹Vyasa Pournima (Guru Purnima): Celebrated in honor of Sage Veda Vyasa, who is credited with installing the deities here.

🌹Vasantha Panchami: Celebrated in Jan/Feb.
