- Temple History Chengalamma Parameshwari Temple is located in Sullurpeta, in Tirupati district of Andhra Pradesh. The temple stands at the southern end of the town, on the banks of the Kalangi River. It is one of the oldest shrines in the region and is believed to have been established between the 4th and 5th centuries. Sullurpeta is well connected, and the temple lies about 79 km from Chennai, 84 km from Tirupati, and 97 km from Nellore. The presiding deity has a unique form. The left side of the idol represents Parvati, the right side represents Saraswati, and the central portion represents Mahalakshmi. These three manifestations together are the reason the goddess is called Trikale Chengali. The Chola sculptors were famous for creating such divine idols. The eight-armed image of the Goddess, standing over a demon and holding powerful weapons, represents both Parvati and Mahakali. Around the 10th century, when the Chola Dynasty ruled this region, a small shrine was built for the Goddess after learning that she manifested from the Kalangi River. In the early days, the deity was known as Tenkali or Dakshina Kali, which later evolved to Chengali and eventually to the present name, Chengalamma. Local legend says that a group of boys swimming in the river discovered the idol. When villagers attempted to lift it, the idol would not move. The next morning, they found the idol standing upright and facing the south. Only after performing special poojas were they able to lift the idol and bring it to its present place of worship. The temple structures feature beautiful sculptures of gods and goddesses across the walls and pillars. The mandapam roof displays intricate carvings visible from a distance. The complex, spread over about five acres, is built on hard sandstone. In addition to the main sanctum, the premises also house shrines for Lord Ganesha, Sri Valli Sametha Subrahmanya Swamy, Abhaya Anjaneya Swamy, Nava Grahas, Naga Devatha, and the temple’s sacred anthill (putta). The Chengalamma Vruksham, located within the temple, is considered highly sacred. Chengalamma vruksham will have many devata murthies. ISRO scientists also visit and take blessings of amma before launching rockets.
