- Temple History The Ramappa Temple, also known as the Rudreshwara Temple, is a 13th-century architectural masterpiece located in Palampet, Telangana. Built in 1213 AD during the reign of the Kakatiya Dynasty, it holds the unique distinction of being the only temple in India named after its chief architect, Ramappa. In 2021, its historical and cultural significance was globally recognized when it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. What sets the temple apart is its incredible engineering, specifically the use of "floating bricks" for its roof. These bricks are so lightweight and porous that they float on water, significantly reducing the weight on the structure. The temple was built using a "sandbox technique" for the foundation, which has allowed it to remain standing for over 800 years, even surviving a major earthquake in the 17th century that damaged many surrounding structures. Dedicated to Lord Shiva (Ramalingeswara), the temple is a gallery of exquisite artistry. 🛕The Monolithic Nandi: Located in a separate Nandi Mandapam facing the main shrine, this huge Nandi (bull) is carved from a single stone. It is unique because it is depicted in an "attentive" or "alert" posture, as if ready to execute the Lord’s command, whereas most Nandis are shown in a resting position.
🛕Koteswara Swamy: This is one of the two sub-shrines located within the temple complex, dedicated to another form of Lord Shiva.
🛕Kameswara Swamy: The second sub-shrine in the complex. Although it is currently in a ruined state, it remains a significant part of the original temple layout.
