- Temple History The Sri Bhadrakali Sametha Veerabhadra Swamy Temple in Bonthapally is an ancient shrine with roots dating back over 500 to 1,000 years, primarily associated with the Kakatiya Empire of the 12th century. The temple's architecture reflects a unique blend of Kakatiya and Chalukyan styles, featuring a grand gopuram and a sanctum sanctorum that houses a Swayambhu (self-manifested) idol of Lord Veerabhadra sculpted from black granite. Legend states that the temple was established to honor the fierce form of Lord Shiva, who manifested as Veerabhadra to destroy the arrogance of King Daksha following the sacrifice of Goddess Sati. Local history is enriched by a popular folklore involving a village shepherd. According to tradition, Lord Veerabhadra appeared to a shepherd at night, expressing his desire to move from a smaller, older shrine to a new location. The Lord instructed the shepherd to carry Him on his shoulders as far as he could until he grew tired, with the strict condition that the shepherd must not look back during the journey. Upon reaching the current site in Bonthapally, the shepherd’s curiosity overcame him, and when he turned around, he was immediately transformed into a stone statue. This statue is said to still exist in the village today, serving as a testament to the temple's divine origins. Over the centuries, the temple evolved from a local guardian shrine into a major pilgrimage center for the Shaivite tradition, particularly for the Arya Vysya and Veerashaiva Lingayat communities who revere Veerabhadra as their family deity.
