- Temple History The source of light for all worlds, the bestower of health to all living beings, the visible deity of this universe... Lord Surya! Lord Surya, who is praised as the embodiment of the Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva), is a revered deity in all religions. Symbolizing the cycle of time, with his 12 forms and seven horses representing the seven days of the week, this supreme deity continues his ceaseless journey, providing light and health to the world. Everywhere civilization has flourished, there are traces of sun worship. Evidence of sun worship has also been found in the Egyptian pyramids. Although Lord Surya protects all living beings every moment with his dawn rays, there are very few temples dedicated to him that receive worship worldwide. In our state, along with the Arasavalli Surya temple in Srikakulam district, the Sri Surya Bhagavan Temple in Tirumalagiri, Secunderabad Cantonment area, thrives with the worship of devotees and daily rituals of incense, lamps, and offerings. This temple is built in a vast area amidst nature. Following the command of Lord Surya, who manifested himself as a self-originated deity, Sri Surya Sharan Das Maharaj constructed the temple. As a devotee of the sun god, he installed the idol of Surya in this hilly region in 1959. He took the responsibility of the temple construction upon his shoulders and completed it with great energy. The way the temple is built is particularly attractive to devotees. For devotees entering the temple, receiving the blessings of the emerald Ganesha carved on the stone is a wonderful spiritual experience. Along with the Sun God, there are sub-shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Goddess Saraswati, the Naga deity, Sri Satyanarayana Swamy, and the Ashwatha tree. Special pujas are performed on Makar Sankranti, when the sun enters the Capricorn constellation, and on Ratha Saptami, the birthday of the Sun God. Devotees believe that performing 108 circumambulations over 12 weeks fulfills their wishes. Since the Sun God appears in 12 forms, these circumambulations are performed for 12 Sundays.
