- Temple History Annavaram is one of the most famous holy shrines in India and holds the second position after Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh in terms of pilgrimage importance. Situated on Ratnagiri hill, the temple is dedicated to Lord Sri Veera Venkata Satyanarayana Swamy (Lord Satyadeva), who is worshipped here in a unique form representing the Divine Trinity (Trimurti)—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The temple follows Dravidian architectural style and is beautifully located with views of the Eastern Ghats, the Bay of Bengal, and the sacred Pampa River, which flows near the hill, symbolizing purity and divine grace. This unique form of worship attracts both Vaishnava and Shaiva devotees, uniting them beyond sectarian differences. The temple’s significance is described in the Revakhanda of Skanda Purana. According to legend, Ratnakara, son of Meru (king of mountains), performed intense penance and was blessed by Lord Vishnu, who manifested here as Sri Satyanarayana Swamy, while Ratnakara himself became Ratnagiri hill. The hill ranges are also historically important, having served as strategic locations for Sri Krishadevaraya’s military campaigns and later as hideouts for Alluri Seetharama Raju during the freedom struggle. The present temple traces its origin to 1891 AD, when the self-manifested idol was rediscovered following a divine dream and was later reconstructed several times, most recently during 2011–2012. Architecturally, the Annavaram temple is built in the form of a chariot, symbolizing the universe as described in Agni Purana and Silpa Sastra. The idol of the Lord is about 13 feet tall, with the lower sanctum representing Brahma, the middle Shiva, and the upper Vishnu, making it one of the very few temples where Brahma is worshipped along with Vishnu and Shiva. The ground floor houses a powerful Srimathripathvibhuti Vaikuntha Maha Narayana Yantra with Panchayatana deities, while the upper floor contains the main idol along with Goddess Anantha Lakshmi and Lord Shiva.
